Association of names with a particular sex changes
with time and place. In England, I believe, Evelyn is
more likely to be a male than in the U.S. Florence
was primarily male until Florence Nightengale, and
now rare among males.
My younger daughter carries the middle name Kendall,
which she uses primarily. Her mother and I picked it
long before she was born as one that would fit either
sex. She had ancestors with Kendall as family name,
and there's a good wine to serve at a family birthday
dinner......
In other countries there are surprises, Anne and Marie
are well known for males in France, and a really tough
character with the first one killed a king of France in
a tournament. Some of the traditional boys' names
in my father's family included Gaspar, Joachim (Quimet)
and Baldomero, and Joan (John in Catalan). My
mother's included, in French, John the Baptist as
a given name.
I disclaim responsibility for the reaction of a boy you
might choose to name Evelyn, but if you do, fill his
room with books by Evelyn Waugh. In French, you
would have to have a sharp ear to tell even a speaker
fond of archaisms pronounce your name, Michelle
any differently than the male counterpart, Michel.
Nicknames have gotten rather bland the last few
centuries.
