Choppy,

Most FTP/HTTP servers around the globe hosting those
CD images are pretty slammed right now. Putting the
images on some local server would at least make it
available to BRLUG members with faster connections
than dial-up. I can download about 80KB/sec sustained
and sometimes much faster than that.

So:

650,000,000 kilobytes / 80,000 kilobytes/sec = 8125
seconds / 60 seconds = 135 minutes.

That is assuming that I am able to download
_kilobytes_ instead of _kilobits_. Guess I'm off to
www.dslreports.org for a quick test.

Sure, I agree that dial-up connections will be very
slow, but even if you were downloading the files from
a server connected to your ISP, you would notice a
higher sustained throughput rate overall, merely
because you are both on the same local network.
