Yeah, I have had the same problem with a friend of mine's computer with Slackware 8.0. I think it's the kernel version. 2.4.5 allows you to get usb mouse working in 5 minutes. 2.4.17 or higher in my experience doesn't handle usb properly for some reason. I put 2.4.17-ac8 on his machine and the keyboard would lock up as soon as gpm was started. keyboard is PS/2 style. I would think if you go get an old kernel, 2.4.5 for sure, it will work as I have gotten my friend's comp to work with that. Problem is, ext3 isn't supported so he went with 2.4.18 and uses a USB-to-PS/2 adapter for his mouse. This is the only way I know to fix it.
