Actually, I've thought about that. Instead, I plan to put up a Jabber server (http://www.jabber.org). It uses XML to exchange messages and there are already a bunch of Jabber clients.
If you are interested in chatting with BRLUG and other local Linux users, check out irc.openprojects.net/#brlug. Some of us are usually hanging out there. I'm there during business hours.
