OK, here's what I get from the faq. First off, without the linux kit installed, the playstation 2 boots into the "ps2 os", or something like that. Not much to it at all. Just a place to configure internal clock and stuff. Here's what happens when the hard drive is installed. First, it looks for media in the dvd drive, in which case it will boot into the ps2 os which resides on rom inside the ps2. If there is no media in the drive, it will boot into Linux. I've made this assumption based on the fact that the faq says if you want to play a game or dvd, you have to place the media in the drive and reboot the machine because the games aren't playable while linux is running also.
