http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ I have connected from multiple machines on a VERY local network. Don't know if / how it might work on win machines across routers and such. The UNIX version should work well though. You are so right about bandwidth. I have used it over dialup 31000 bps and it is a bit slow. I have not used compression though.
