ok, the formatting of the mbr didnt work right. i got a sound card recognized and xmms was playing my mp3s, but no sound was coming out of the speaker.. everything was plugged in right and volume was up... it is an older ensoniq sound card. also i was given an old 28.8 hardware modem which linux detects beuautifully, and i dialed into eatel, everything worked, except i wouldnt get a response from any servers except for my isp (i pinged random ips). this computer is also on a network, and pinged the other computer just fine...
