Hi John,

        Well if I read the tone of the article right it, it sounds as if the
author is surprised that there are "conditions" linked to the original
"free" gift of the Linux ... as in "If I got it free then everyone must
get it free."  I find it easy to accept that the distros may have
conditions - although I think they ought to be a bit more open about
them up front.

        There's a difference between "Free" and "Public Domain" which the
article appears to miss.  For instance - if I give you a book there's no
implication that I have to give everyone a book.  Likewise, you can't
copy the book and give everyone a copy of the book - even though the
book was "free" - at least in the sense that it cost you nothing.

        My point is that even "free" gifts can have conditions - the acronym
TNSTAAFL (There's No Such Thing As A Free Lunch" makes the point that
even if you get something "free" ... someone, somewhere "paid" for you
to get it "free" and there will most likely be some payback required
somewhere.
