or you can old skool it... run ppp from command line on its own nice terminal (ctrl + alt + f6 or something out of the way) and just ctrl + c it or kill it from another command line when you are done... but if you are using kppp, it iconifies itself. i know if you are running blackbox you press the middle button on your mouse if you have one or both buttons if you dont, and you will see a menu option labeled icons... its there... or however else you get to icons..
