It's been great to see the release of new Linux versions over the =
past few weeks. Whether you use their products or not, the commitment of =
Suse, Mandrake, and RedHat to continued inprovements in Linux. The OS =
that Linus created for fun continues to improve in many ways, providing =
powerful tools, solving complex problems, and bringing general computer =
fun to more and more users each day.
However, with that growth comes some problems. All three major new =
distros have also released a slew of security and bugfixes. In Mandrake, =
these errata include updates to:
a.. tcpdump=20
b.. rm=20
c.. iptables=20
d.. libsafe=20
e.. imlib=20
f.. sudol=20
g.. squid=20
RedHat has produced the following patches since the release of =
Valhalla:
a.. Updated Mozilla packages=20
b.. Perl-digest fixes=20
c.. Netfilter fix=20
d.. Updated mod_python packages=20
Suse has released quite a list of patches. You can find it here. =
They have a longer window since their most recent release, so the fact =
that this is a pretty sizeable patch list in comparison to the other is =
to be expected.
All in all, though, these releases appear to be stable =
well-planned improvements on the previous versions from all three. You =
might think a bit differently if you've subscribed to any of the distro =
specific mailing lists - there's a lot of bickering and bantering about =
one problem or the other. But, the truth is, it all seems to be a matter =
of not seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. Overall, Linux =
continues to grow in a very impressive way. There are considerably fewer =
post-release problems than even just a year or two ago. I mean, need I =
really mention RedHat 7.0?
It is, indeed, a good time to be a Penguin.

XF86Config - Part XII
Today, we're continuing our look at the Device section of =
XF86Config. Bear in mind when reading today's installment that many of =
the subsections described are special-use cases, rarely needed for the =
common user or common hardware. But, I promised you a thorough look at =
the XF86Config file, so we'll mention these subsections with the above =
caveat.
BIOSBase subsection:
This is a necessary section of XF86Config if your video card =
requires a starting I/O address. This should be in hex form (0x...) and =
is most often used for onboard cards.
MemBase subsection:
The MemBase subsection defines the base address for the linear =
frame buffer device within your video card. The most common server that =
may require this subsection is the Mach64 X server, used for many ATI =
cards. This is irrelevant to all cards not utilizing linear frame =
buffering.
IOBase subsection:
The IOBase subsection can be used to define the base address of =
the video card. Again, this is a rarely-required parameter, but may be =
useful in the event that you encounter card-related problems. The base =
address for a PCI add-on card can be found in the results of the more =
/proc/pci command.
Much thought and care has gone into the development of XF86Config. =
But then again, you can see why with all the elements an X server must =
know and keep track of to build a pretty GUI.
Recommend It!

Dumps
As you spend more time in Linux, you're invariably going to =
encounter a core dump. It happens for any number of reasons, of which =
the most common is a poorly-written program. If you're a programmer, you =
probably already run into more than you care to count. Dumps, regardless =
of the reasons they occur, are a part of Linux.
Core dumps will be found in the directory from which the dumping =
program was running. These are files called core that contain the state =
of the program at the time it failed. To prgrammers, core dumps can be =
very useful in debugging an in-development program. A key diagnostic =
tool for assessing the cause of a program failure via core dumps is gdb. =
By executing the command
gdb name of program core
you'll be able to examine the state of the program at the time of =
the dump. This can point you precisely in the direction of a solution to =
the program's failure.
For most users, however, core dumps are more of a nusiance than a =
tool. Given that the core file contains every element of the program's =
state at the time of failure, these files can be huge. If you find a =
core file in a directory on your system, you can safely delete it =
without concern.
Unless, that is, you just like the little bright yellow bomb icon =

The Linux Center is a portal site with hundreds of links to other =
Linux-related sites and information. It's very well-organized, breaking =
out the main index into such categories as Applications, System, =
Politics, and Distributions. I found the Politics category especially =
interesting, with subcategories for Anti-Monopolies site, People and The =
Open Source Model. The Linux center is definitely a good source of =
information and background on Linux.
