We are going to be installing Mandrake Linux 8.2 on
_your_ home machines. So feel free to bring your PCs
that you would like Linux installed on. Or, if you
already have Linux installed on your PC and you have
some questions, feel free to bring that too!

Suggestions on preparing your PC to install Mandrake
Linux 8.2:
1. Make sure your computer actually boots. :) A good
way to test that is to run Tom's Root/Boot Linux
Rescue floppy disk. You can find that here:
http://www.toms.net/rb/ (you will need to be in DOS to
make this).
Bill Leblanc generously made some copies with a really
nice disk label, so contact me if you need one that is
already made.
2. Make backups of any critical data, like documents
and email, that may be on your computer's hard drive.
3. You will need ~2GB free to install a full-blown
default installation of Mandrake Linux 8.2. This
includes a whole slew of applications, games, and
other various software.
3a. To create this ~2GB free space on your hard drive,
you should either install an extra hard drive in your
computer, OR:
3b. Re-partition your hard drive. We will have
Partition Magic available at the meeting and we can
help you re-partition your hard drive. Re-partitioning
means that we are shrinking the hard drive space used
by Microsoft Windows to make room for Mandrake Linux.
4. Bring your CPU, mouse, keyboard, monitor,
_power_cables_ and a power strip if you have one (we
don't have many at CCCC). If you have a network card
or telephone modem, install it in the PC if you can.
If not, bring it and we can help you install it.
5. Send a message to either: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED] that you are bringing
your machine so that we have a head count and room for
your machine. Info on signing up:

To BRLUGers and old hands at Linux:

We are in dire need of Linux experts for the next
Newbie meeting to help with Mandrake Linux
installations and to answer questions. We are also in
need of about a 12(?)+ port Ethernet hub to help with
file transfers, etc, for the installs. If you want to
help with Linux advocacy, here is your chance to help
a group of enthusiastic Newbies get their feet wet in
the Linux adventure!

Thanks,
John Hebert
