Installed Red Hat 7.3 with KDE as default GUI. When I boot to command line and issue startx, KDE begins to load, then locks up the system so all I can do is reset to reboot.
If I issue the startx command immediately after booting, the loading gets to the next to last icon. If I have been working for a few minutes from the command line, it locks up the system earlier in the KDE startup, usually by the middle icon. I assume there is some configuration clash, but don't know where to start looking, and what I'm looking for. Any ideas? Intent is to set up dial-up networking. Can't find Linuxconfig, for which I have directions for entering my ISP's information. At one time, with Gnome as default, I was able to set up dial-up via a Gnome utility, but I prefer KDE's desktop options. Used setup to verify correct configuration of sound card and video system. Get sound as KDE starts to startup, and heard Linus pronounce Linux when configuring sound card -- SB16. Understand that Control+Alt+backspace is supposed to kill running program, but KDE lockup doesn't respond, or to the three finger salute, which produces shutdown from the command line as expected. Seems RH 7.3 doesn't do thinks like the books I have say. Yukh! Choppy
