Ed, I am considering it and have been for some time. While I was working for Control Engineers in Houma, I started prepping for the test but we kept on having kids and I postponed. (Geez, there wasn't much else to do in Houma :-) I flit back and forth between pure software development and some form of engineering (controls...hmi...embedded systems...even circuit board design). Perhaps, they've got some sort of software discipline. In my career, I'm left of center and am trying to steer myself back toward the Engineering end of the spectrum.
Thanks for the pointers.... One other thing, what kind of burden are the Cont Ed requirements? Hi Craig, It was for me as I was in private practice for about 15 years and is a requirement for registering the practice as well as offering engineering services. I also think that the law requires PE registration if you use the term "engineer" or "engineering" on business cards, letter head, etc. Also, a number of our clients require that we stamp/seal documents for them, even in the industrial sector, and in order to do so, a PE registration is required, and, hopefully, they pay me more having it......:-) I would encourage you to pursue registration. In recent years, a number of different registration specialties have been added including Controls Engineer, etc. If you are interested, I would suggest that you browse the boards web site at http://www.lapels.com/ . I took the EE PE and the Principals and Practices exams 5 years out of college and passed both the 1st time through. If you are actually practicing within the discipline of the exam that you are taking, it is not all that difficult, just rather intense and tedious. When I took it, the PE was a very practical exam and, for the most part, involved things that I was doing in my job on a regular basis, even though the 1st time pass rate was less than 30%. Ed, I'm also an E.E. I didn't know you had a P.E. Was it a worthwile pursuit? Isn't it interesting that Micro$oft is the biggest backer in an organization called the Initiative for Software Choice ( http://softwarechoice.org/ ) and that they create this "initiative" only after they perceive the "Linux Phenomenon", to use their own words, a true threat to their MONOPOLY! I also found it interesting that Intel is also one of the backers. I think I will just stick with AMD chips from here on out. http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-949527.html <http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-949527.html> Ed Richards, PE Staff Electrical Engineer Ford, Bacon & Davis, LLC 12021 Lakeland Park Drive Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70809 Office - 225-297-3335 Fax - 225-756-3056 Cell - 225-964-2606 [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> _______________________________________________ General mailing list [email protected] http://brlug.net/mailman/listinfo/general_brlug.net _______________________________________________ General mailing list [email protected] http://brlug.net/mailman/listinfo/general_brlug.net _______________________________________________ General mailing list [email protected] http://brlug.net/mailman/listinfo/general_brlug.net
