Hello:

First of all, there was a thread a few days ago about someone not being
able to get the sound working, I think it was matt. Anyway, I
reinstalled my system and I had the same problem so I remmember! What I
have to do in Slackware is add read and write permission for other users
to /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp chmod o+rw /dev/mixer and the same for the
other. I was hopping that this woudl help.

Why did I reisntall? I have a problem with GIMP and fonts. They are
jagged/bitmapped. I have check my font path in the XF86config and I do
not see the problem here it is plus I added a few others from some
instructions somewhere:

    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/PEX" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Latin2" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/" extra
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/" extra

There are some fonts that display ok, namely, courier and charter and
maybe some other ones but I did not check. Helvetica displays bitmapped
which I found odd. Everything was working ok as far as I remember. I
have used GIMP frequently and never had this problem before. I was on a
different computer though and I do not remmember if I ever did anything
special which I normally would. It was the slackware also. Well,
HELPPPPP!

I am thinking that maybe I just need to install more fonts but I will
patiently wait for a better or cooler option, particularly because the
Helvetica is not displaying properly.

Thanks

Alvaro Zuniga
