Old Bill would have loved movies, but he would have agreed you give
away a lot for the same of brevity. The movies are very good, but I
would say they are a pale comparison to the books. Whole characters
and plot lines are trimmed away. The trilogy is around a thousand
pages, without the indexes. There is a primer for two languages
built in and all sorts of background information. The movies are
great, but you can't get a grip on the true evil and glory of
Tolkien's characters from the silver screen. The story is reduced
from awesome to a damn good yarn. Still, even the movie is a dmaned
good yarn.

My daughter and I are going to see the next one as soon it comes out.
We started reading the books together when she was five. We
probably read them three times before she got to be too old to hang
out that much with daddy. She's old enough now that it isn't
mortifying to go to a flick with daddy again.

Enjoy the movie. The one you can rent is the first of three.
