Interesting article from the distant past -- 1977. Note an error of fact or two. As I recall Linus Torvalds created Linux not directly from Unix, but as an alternative to Minix, a proprietary OS for the PC used in teaching operating systems but not designed to do much practical. A text long widely used in Computer Science departments for the OS course was written by the author of Minix and intended to be used with it. May still be used, for all I know, but there is probably intense pressure to switch to Linux to go to an open system.
