I thought I would offer an update on my installing
KDE3.1.1 on my RedHat 8.0 box.
I have tried to compile KDE on my own once before,
but it proved to be a very tedious task and I didn't
have time to devote to waiting on the compilation.

So, I have been checking KDE's site regularly waiting
for rpm's for either RH7.3 or 8.0. Finally rpm's for
RH8 came out so I installed RH8 so I could check out
KDE3.1.

Installing the rpm's was kind of tricky I assume that
because the rpm's were released very recently not many
people have install them and there isn't much help on
how to install. I was flying blind for the most part.
I found one small bit of help on the KDE site saying...

install arts first and then kdelibs
kdeaddons last.
The other packages can be installed in any arbitrary order.

This wasn't much help but at least it was something to
work with.

The biggest problem I had was trying to get rpm to let me
install the packages. Every time I would install something
it would say that it needed something from the older package.
I soon gave up on trying to see if each package would work
and was only installing with the --nodeps option. Even then
I still received a few errors so I went back and reinstalled
a few packages. I would install arts for instance and I would
be told I need the arts-develop package to install, if I installed
the arts-develop package I would be told I need the arts package.
After praying a lot, crossing my fingers and holding my breath
I rebooted and watched RH8 boot. My first problem is that RH8 uses
the bluecurve theme in both KDE and GNOME and it took me a few
minutes to realize that I had booted into GNome with bluecurve!
hahaha... I was pissed about that.

Well I restarted X and made sure to select KDE and it booted
with no problems.
The only "problem" I have at this point is that crappy bluecurve
theme. KDE doesn't really look any different than it did before.
I verified I was running KDE3.1.1 by going to the control center.

I like to use the SIM icq client, but I can't install it because
KDE3.1.1 had to install a newer QT and SIM doesn't know how to use
the new QT. So far after about 10 hours of use of RH8 w/KDE3.1.1
SIM is the biggest problem I've had so far. I had to resort to
using licq. I have it working, but I don't know how to use it.
Well that's all I have for now.
I'll let yall know if I find out anything exciting.
I did find some themes, and I've applied them.
Things are looking better now!
