I was reading an article on osnews.com and ran across this, I read some of the mentioned article, it's an interesting read so far.
This has been referenced a million times or so, and its a bit dated now, (written in 99 or so), but Neal Stephenson wrote long essay (novella maybe) called In the Beginning was the Command Line. You can read it online for free here: http://www.spack.org/index.cgi/CommandLine Its a great piece that goes into a lot of the sociological/cultural/psychological backgrounds of users of different operating systems, focusing on MacOS, Windows, BeOs, and Linux/Unix. It definitely has a pro-Unix style os bent to it, but I would consider it essential reading for those looking into cultural and social issues surrounding OS usage/adoption/etc. -- Brad Bendily - CNA
