I have been having pretty good luck with updating my workstations
automatically. Most of my services run on Solaris anyway, so most of
what I am doing is managing laptops and workstations with this. So it
is not as big an issue. I just like to be able to see who is or is not
updating their laptops/desktops. It allows me to have a grasp of the
state of the machines without having to scan them with nessus, etc.
Most people want the root password to their workstations so that they
can install their own software, etc. I trust most of these users not to
misconfigure the system, but I do not trust them to keep up with
security patches. I have only had one incident of a hacker in my
Solaris boxen, but I have had multiple incidents where a linux box was
hacked.
