Yeah, that's how I do scsi. One dinky IDE disk for boot with files I want fast access to on the scsi. In your case, the files you care about are on the raid. If the IDE fails, it's just boot and system files that can be replaced. Even when the motherboard BIOS says it will boot off a scsi, it generally has not done it easy enough to be worth my trouble. I've always wanted to make a compact flash boot disk, but have not bothered. I've never tried raid proper as I never had the need.
