BRLUGgers: Help a budding geek to find a cheap, used laptop to use with Linux. Anybody know of an old working laptop that needs a good home?
Togopher, I can only recommend what I know from past experience. The best laptop brands are IBM, Dell, Compaq and Toshiba, in that order. It is possible that other manufacturers make good laptops as well, but parts for laptops other than big brands like these are hard to find. You can find old laptops from these manufacturers on Ebay and other places on the web. Search on Ebay for IBM laptops sorted by price ($ to $$$): http://listings.ebay.com/pool2/plistings/lowest/all/category31551/index.html ?from=R0 And you really need to take a look at: http://www.linux-laptop.net Nice site, organized by manufacturer. When you find an ideal candidate for a laptop, check out this site to see how Linux works with it. I recommend that you ask for more opinions on the [email protected] mailing list once you find some specific laptop models. It is difficult to answer specifically for open ended questions like "what do you recommend?". My only answer is that there are many laptops out there that would suit you. It might be easier to answer if I knew what you wish to do with a laptop. A good rule of thumb is that more CPU intensive apps will drive up the cost of your laptop. So, text mode/command line interface Linux will be very cheap. More memory and larger laptop hard drives will cost more $$$ as well. Good luck! Hey, Your idea sounds great! I will start saving. I might even save enought to get a $40 one. But I have never had a laptop before, so I would like some suggestion on exactly what to get (Brand, Screen, etc.). Thank you very much,
