We use a combination of RedHat Advanced Server, sendmail,
Eudora qpopper (for pop), University of Washington imapd,
Novell's eDir for LDAP access, all stored on a Xiotech SAN.

I don't know all the details, but it can be done.

Everything is stored in our LDAP tree, aliases, user accounts,
home directories, shell, even ID's for other systems that
authenticate to our LDAP tree.

It's a very sweet setup. You are welcome to come take a tour.
We could trade tours!
