I happily run Gentoo on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200).  

I've also run Debian on a couple of different boxes.  With Debian
on a compaq evo a year or so back I had to do some extra work to
get X going but otherwise it was straightforward.  It really depends
 on the hardware you are getting.
