Actually, from reading some of the post on /. someone offered an 
interesting view on the Novell/WordPerfect fiasco.

It was suggested that Novell didn't want the WordPerfect part anyway. They
just wanted the Groupwise part. They(Whoever had it before Novell) didn't
want to sell just Groupwise, so Novell bought the whole thing then just 
sold off the stuff they didn't want.

My view is that the Novell that bought and messed up all those other
softwares, is not the same Novell that's there today.
So hopefully things will turn out positively for all those involved with
the Ximian purchase. However, Novell is in the business of making money,
so it's likely they made the decision because they wanted one piece
of the Ximian company, then they'll dump the rest. But from this purchase
they do get a lot of talented developers. That will help any company
a lot i think.
