Hadn't heard of WPA before, thanks for the heads up. However, he said he
wanted to connect to the ULL WLAN because, I assume, ULL does not provide a
network jack to each dorm room. So, a WAP would be kinda useless. But who
knows? Maybe Stephen just has a network cable phobia.

Stephen, can you clarify whether or not ULL provides a network jack to your
dorm room? If so, and it is free, you don't need a wifi card (unless you
wanna be an "inquisitive" geek). If not, then prepare to fortify your
desktop against the hax0r hordes.

Also, you need to make sure before purchasing your card that you can
actually _receive_ ULL WLAN traffic to your dorm room. Remember that wifi
traffic is just RF and can be stopped by all kinds of obstructions: wood,
metal, electrical fields, etc. Wifi WLAN connections usually have to be line
of sight. There are some parts of my house where I can not get a good
signal, yet there are other parts that are farther away where I can connect
just fine. It really depends on lots of factors. The odds are it won't work
in a dorm room unless you can put your PC next to a window with line of
sight to a WAP.

Will the PC be running Linux or Windows? If Windows go ahead and get a
card
and AP that will do WPA (i.e., Belkin). That way you don't need to worry

about broken WEP anymore. As far as I know there isn't any Linux support

for WPA yet.
