After just one week at Computer Heaven, I'm convinced that EVERY Microsoft run
computer is infected by something. They get things that turn off their modems,
wipe out system files, hide their CD and floppy so that you can't boot from
them and other nasty things. Wipe and reload fixes it and is the most
practical route, because it's just about impossible to find and remove the
problem. No single virus scan finds them all and the damage done is constantly
shifting. The user only acts when they can no longer use their computer, but
they almost always describe a steady deterioration of performance. The
Microsoft internet experience is one long and miserable assault of
advertisements and malware that exploits the same holes and more. One of the
more disturbing developments I've heard of is full screen pop-up adverts that
appear while the user is off doing something else so that XP == TV without a
censor.
