well the other thing you could do is. install the mail server on the extra
machine also make it into  a firewall/router so that  you could keep
your main system behind that extra machine. so the next time you reboot
you don't have to worry about your email.

just out of curiosity is your connection DSL for residential or
commercial? or something different?
