I have couple of scripts that may help.  
One is a perl script mbox2maildir.pl .  It's a slightly modfied
version of the same that ships with qmail.  I used that to 
convert my mboxen to maildirs.

Then I found a python script mdirarchive.py to break up
the automatically into folders named like "ArchiveMail.2003-08"
. Actually I am running this one out of cron and it's archiving my
inbox and my sent folder into these sorted folders. you tell
mdirarchive how many days old a message has to be to archive.
It automatically splits the archives up into monthly maildirs.
