Last week I had some fun determining which distros I like....

At home... I finally got one of my scrap boxes to run (lack of
memory)....and for comparison purposes I did installs in slackware9.2,
debian3, knoppix-std, and koppix3.3...

slack installed ok but was a little hard to find all software
debian did pretty much the same thing
knoppix-std (using knx-hdinstall) installed an incomplete system (didn't
even carry over all the security tools)
knoppix-3.3 (knx-hdinstall) worked like a champ and I'm staying with it
so far...got K, samba, and Zope humming along nicely

At work, I decided I needed to re-install boomhaur, a dell 233 craptop
that I had Mandrake8.2 (with incomplete headers {for compiling device
drivers}--bad bad mandrake). I'm re-doing the install do that I can
spark up a Proxim RL2 wireless card and use it for some coverage
debugging (ala kizmet et al) - Like Wardriving...but not sneaky.. (RL2
is a very non standard pre-802.11 protocol that operates on the same ISM
frequecies as 802.11b)

During the first install with knoppix-std, I discovered that boohaur's
cdrom got funky after 10-15 minutes of continuous operation....couldn't
install it... or knoppix3.3...or slack9... (I did rightly classify this
as a craptop)

Debian came to the rescue, the base install was quick enough to work and
allowed for pauses (so the drive could cool down) and I got a system
with K running. I've not had time to tweak either K , sound, or the
network (which didn't pick up correctly even though pcmcia saw my card
and loaded my module). K really (or X) looks rough at 100dpi...gotta
fix it soon... deb 'unbricked' a machine..

I've get to try Mandrake 9x or Suse. I'm not really a big fan of RH.
What are some of your adventures?
