O'Reilly's "Learning Python" (recently revised and updated) is a great
place to start.

Or save your money and try the free tutorial posted online at
python.org. I read that in a day or say playing along in the command
shell and started coding python the next day. I only needed that
tutorial and the library reference also on that site (and in python
itself) to begin doing productive work.
