I think they spell it out in their history, but when last I looked the history was not well organized. The Kobra was the glue that bound the apps together, making the sharing of a single object possible as I recall. I looked into the desktops quite a bit a long time ago trying to decide between Gnome and KDE. I finally went with IceWM.
