I have thrown around the idea of doing a remaster of a kiosk version of knoppix for public libraries. (if i just had the time and the hard drive space ;) ) Here is the post I made at the knoppix forum about a kiosk knoppix for libraries. http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2534#top
What we use here in Abbeville is the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) It is an older version that my friend and I have modified to include a new runlevel (2) where all that starts up on the terminal is X and an older version of netscape starts up on top of it. There is no window manager or anything like that, so if they close netscape, X restarts and netscape starts up again. We have limited the terminals that are in card catalog mode (runlevel 2) to only access our card catalog by using ipchains. There is a rule that says if the web request if from the ipaddress of the card catalog terminal, then only let it access opac.vermilion.lib.la.us and no other site. It seems to be rock solid, the only problem is that I'm not sure if I could ever reproduce the results I'm getting here. I guess that comes from lack of documentation on my part and a lot of "try this and see if it works" configuration. BTW, what library are you from?
