this article was posted on /. yesterday I guess. Like any other study this has flaws too. <snip> To arrive at its conclusions, mi2g analysed 17.074 successful digital attacks against servers and networks. It states: "With Linux accounting for 13,654 breaches, Windows for 2,005 breaches followed by BSD and Mac OS X with 555 breaches worldwide in January 2004." </snip>
I wonder how they arrived at these figures. Did they ask around? Looks like this is more like a survey than a security analysis. Its not science. The systems they "surveyed" are not run similar services i guess.Besides its says linux? what is linux? suse? redhat? debian? what kernel version? 1.0? And most organizations won't advertize that they had been 0wn3d at some point of time or the other. In any case i think the best exploits and "hacks" and still unknown because they may not have found any traces. <snip> The group discounted the recent wave of worms, viruses and other attacks that have affected Windows systems worldwide. It confined the study to overt digital attacks by hackers </snip> Yeah right! you can forget about security issues that are would really make windows look bad. call it whatever you want but should every thing be considered when you are researching? and leaving this would have skewed the results. This article might be interesting to read. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/28233.html Honestly, the article isn't worth anything. I know mac users would be thrilled about it, and so would we if Linux had made it as the winner. I guess any os could be made as secure as any other. One thing I do accept from the article is the fact that most of the sysadmins have "inadequate training and knowledge" in securing Linux boxes. <snip> While offering Windows Server administrators some credit for seeing off many of the attacks.... </snip> please... -- Karthik Poobalasubramanian [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------- Original Message ----------- From: "Giovanni Tairov" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, 22 Feb 2004 22:18:16 -0600 (CST) Subject: [brlug-general] unsecure Linux > What is your opinion on this article? > http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/top_news_item.cfm?NewsID=7980 > > What work has to be done to change things around? > > Fair analysis only, please. :) > > GT > > _______________________________________________ > General mailing list > [email protected] > http://brlug.net/mailman/listinfo/general_brlug.net ------- End of Original Message -------
