Debian comes in three flavors. Stable, Testing, and
Unstable (aka Sid - the evil kid next door that breaks
toys). You can point your config file for apt-get to
any of them, but I do not recommend it it. Avoid Sid.
You will eventually need to use SID-based apps, but
the name tells the story. It is called unstable, or
Sid, for a reason.

Also, spt-get synaptic as your first apt-get. It is a
GUI for apt-get that shows you what you have already.
You can frequently avoid having to install anythin by
using Synaptic. "Uh, duh, I already have it. Who
knew?"

Debian usually comes with a wealth of stuff.

Next, avoid the flame-fest that is the debian-users
email list. Prima Donna's and jerks.

I reccomend the email list at www.libranet.com. It is
widely known as the most user-friendly debian support
group on the planet. They have a forum too, same
attitude. If you have a question, ask it. If it
really hard, that's is great. If the answer is the
first hit had you bothered to google even once, that
is OK too. Just participate, and do not flame the OT
postings.

Good luck Shannon, and welcome to the geek distro.
Why do they call it that? Are there a lot of celebs
and stock brokers hanging out with the A-list in
Barbados using Redhat and putting copies of Redhat
for Dummies on thier coffee tables?
