Well, what do you know, a start.  If windoze had symlinks so that you could 
make your paths all work and they included a pile of GNU utilities to call 
and make it worth the effort and ... I wonder why it's disabled by default.  

Nice to know it's there, thanks Tim.  I dread being forced ot use Microsoft, 
but dumber things have happened to me.
