Anyone have any experience running a W2K domain using bind 9 for the DNS
server? I just set this up on my home network (need to test a project in a
M$ "security" environment) and was curious if I set the zone up correctly in
bind. I'm not a bind or DNS expert (in fact I'm far from it, I probably
know just about enough to get myself in major trouble) so I figured I'd ask
here since some of you deal with stuff like this daily.

After ActiveDirectory install on the 2K server I just blindly grabbed the
netlogon.dns file the install generated and included it in my existing bind
zone file for my local domain. Was having problems with an XP machine:
domain logon was taking like 3-5 mins and it would "lose" the network after
a while (would not be able to browse machines/shares on the network). After
a while I finally took a closer look at the netlogon.dns file and found some
weird stuff: 1) the A record was 2Kmachine.mydomain.com (was giving me some
weird results - 2Kmachine.mydomain.com and
2Kmachine.mydomain.com.mydomain.com both resolved to 2Kmachine's ip
address), 2) all the SRV records had 2Kmachine.2Kmachine.mydomain.com (which
doesn't exist). I changed the A record to be just 2Kmachine and that
cleared up the weird resolve issue, I also changed all of the SRV records to
be 2Kmachine.mydomain.com.

The logon now takes about 1 min and I don't appear to be "losing" the
network (it's only been 1 day since I made the change but it was "loosing"
the network every few hours) - was curious if I set this up correctly -
anyone know if this is correct?

It almost seems like the XP box couldn't resolve the domain info using the
values from DNS during the logon so it did a "brute force" lookup for the DC
and then cached what it found. When it was time to renew it grabbed the
bogus stuff from DNS and stopped working.

Thanks,

James

Cleve,

I am downloading the iso right now. If anyone else is interested, the iso can
be found here http://danix.hladnov.osu.cz/ . Since the web page is Czech and it
seems that the translation to English doesn't work properly, I poked around
till I found the download page. With regard to speed, I suspect that
Danix/Knoppix 3.4 is booting kernel 2.6 (boot with "knoppix26 lang=us") and is
probably also running KDE 3.2.X which, from what I have read, each of these
effect a significant speed improvement and together effect a substantial speed
improvement. There is an ongoing thread on the Xandros forum regarding
upgrading Xandros 2.0 kernel 2.4.24 to the 2.6 kernel and upgrading KDE to KDE
3.2. That thread can be found here:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=5929&highlight=kernel+2+6. However,
be forewarned that doing so WILL break some of the nice things that makes
Xandros what it is. Having said that, I intend to try it myself and may do so
over the weekend. If you do intend t!
o try it,. BACK UP, BACK UP, and read the forum discussion in its entirety, or
do like I do and use a drive bay and play on a "disposable" installation.

Has anyone else tried out Danix?
If not then let me tell ya 'bout it.
Its another Knoppix remix but based on the 3.4 cd.
Fast, fast, fast........boot with "knoppix26 lang=us"
Ummm, did I mention that its fast.

My home pc is a 700mhz Duron with 512MB. I'm dual-booted with Xandros
2.0 Business Edition as primary and WinXP as secondary. Maybe I'm going
crazy here but this live cd distribution HAS to be faster than either
WinXP or Xandros 2.0 running from the harddrive. INCredible.
I'm impressed.........give it a spin and let me know if everyone has a
similar experience.
