The Gmail invites could be a really interesting science project for google. The invites could be used to show how different groups of people are interconnected. Giving invites to a select few in one group of online users (say techies) and then giving invites to a select few in another group of online users (say dog lovers) you could see how fast, when, and to what extent these groups are connected.
