a)  Somehow, I don't think that anyone with the intelligent, informed and 
concerned enough to be running putty is actually running an unpatched system.

b)  You pays your money and you takes your chances...  You try to train the 
spouse and kid(s), you run antivirus programs, scan for trojans, etc.
