Nice to know you guys are making progress. Most of my friends shy away
from MicroControllers because

#1 Soldering skills (some of them are SMD)
#2 Programming them -> some of the atmels I have are very sensitive, you
can set a fuse that will render the chip useless. So if you screw up
during programming its dead forever.
