I was initially considering moving the switch and
router to the living room, which is in a central
location and would be the logical point to branch off
to the other rooms in the house, but would be butt
ugly.

I had initially considered this idea, but the DSL
termination point is across a closed-in garage, so
there will be multiple (6) cat5e runs in the attic
across it. :P Not fun. However, it would be the
simplest layout and may add some value to the house.
The alternative would be to run an even longer cable
to my office and use that as that as my equipment
closet, but that could be messy and not as adaptable
to another owner.

Good points. I realize I need to adapt to my
particular situation and architecture. I'll probably
go with a shelf as you recommended. Trying to move the
computers and hardware out of my office anyway.
