Right.  Gentoo truly is building a system from scratch without some of the
headaches of LFS.  I use it heavily on all of my systems ;)

I'd have to agree with ryan on the linux from scratch.
Also you might want to try a stage1 gentoo install. It not quick but
should help to see more of what a system actualy consists of, not
quite as indepth as linux from scratch but verbose none the less.
