Terry, Based on your glowing recommendation of SageTV I installed both it and BeyondTV 3.5 this weekend. SageTV didn't work while BeyondTV 3.5 worked flawlessly immediately, allowed me to share the video files, and I was successfully streaming shows from the XBOX within minutes.
I could see how SageTV could be ported to Linux because it looks like it uses an old GUI toolkit (and Java) that looks like Solaris apps. I don't think it's ready though. :( For that matter, neither Myth nor Freevo are either. Frey Technologies, developer of the SageTV HTPC/PVR software that I use, announced at CES on Thursday the release of an OEM Linux version. Linux version -- yea!. OEM -- getting general reaction of "why" and "oh no!" from the forums. Looks like a case where product development and sales under M$ has funded creation and release of a commercial version for Linux. Bravo! Not all companies are taking this step, but little Frey is. But, I still want to see the Linux version available for consumer sales, not just OEM sales. They also announced a Media Extender for $99 to work with any TV and existing SageTV-win and new Sage Media Center (Linux) versions. I'm not hung up on free software. If it is a good product, and the Win version is, and if they'll make a consumer release not just the OEM one, it'll be worth the money. -- Terry Stockdale -- Baton Rouge, LA http://www.terrystockdale.com _______________________________________________ General mailing list [email protected] http://brlug.net/mailman/listinfo/general_brlug.net
