What is the greatest pain in the @(*#& when dealing with Gentoo. In my
opinion is searching for stuff due to the incredible amount of time that
it takes to make a search. I relize that the largest overhead is the
first search. Unfortunately, I usually only search once and the result
set is good enough; therefore, every search is a first.

Anyway, I came across a great utility called "esearch" Those gentoo
users that have never used it are going to be impress with the speed.
Just as fast or faster than "make search" in the FreeBSD ports system.

bash# emerge esearch

The only drawback is that the portage tree has to be indexed everytime
you do an "emerge sync". I do not do to many syncs unless absolutely
necessary. If I cared about being up to date, I would probably have cron
do both the index rebuild and emerge sync a week or so.

I would probably add to cron an "emerge world" every Friday Morning
since I know that the chances of returning home after my regular stop to
happy hour after work are very slim.

If you did not know this utility you are in for a wild ride.
