Ed: I use IceWM - www.icewm.org It has a low footfoot print. To change settings and add or alter the menus just type IcePref (case sensitive) and you're off. You can edit the config files with a text program or vi as well.
www.X.org provides also offers a nice GUI. GDM stores the config settings, in an INI type format, in a text file called gdm.conf. It should be stored here: /etc/X11/gdm This is a good starter set of instructions on gdm: http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/gdmtalk.pdf I'm sure someone on the list can provide more detail. I use the command line more than menus.
