When my old SpeedStream 5360 ethernet bridge died, I replaced it with the
ActionTec GT-704 WG, thinking that combining modem with router was a good way
to eliminate a cable. I found response a little slow (using FastAccess Ultra, a
step above the basic FA) and a few websites couldn't be reached before timing
out. Since we were about to leave our Spanish Town apt. for a Villa Rose condo,
I decided to wait and see if it would work better at the new location (just
across S. Acadian from Capital Heights). Instead it was so bad that the DSL
light flashed most of the time. BS tested the line and found no noise in my
building (only two units in this one-story and the neighbor is a nonagenarian).
They sent a repairman, who found the line wired through an alarm system (not
operating) so took the alarm out of the circuit. The DSL light stays steady
most of the time, but response varies from quick to very slow even on the same
site.

I went back where I bought the gateway and was told it was probably still a BS
problem, but if I wanted to test I should get hold of a DSL modem, which they
don't carry, and test response. I asked the tech at smaller store and he also
thought it was a BS problem.

Another way to test the hardware might be to take it to a site with known good
response on BS, but I don't know of one offhand. I spent an hour with BS at 888
321-2375 last night; unplugged and reconnected every phone in the house, etc.
The conclusion. which I think is the standard one when they can't find the
problem, is that I need to buy a new modem (from them).

The sites I can't reach at all are mostly high traffic, such as eBay and
Google. My credit card and bank sites vary. It's as if I am at the bottom of
the priority list and can get in only if no one else is there.
