I've been using LogMeIn (www.logmein.com) for this type of thing.
They have a free version for home use. I've not used a linux desktop
to connect to my home PC, but I just found the paragraph below.
So, it looks like it works if using a Linux browser to connect to Windows.

On there site they have a PDF that explains the technology, which
after looking at bumpvnc sounds like they're both doing the same thing.
However, logmein doesn't stay in the middle, once you're
connected, you're connected directly. If bumpvnc is using vnc as
it's basis, I wonder how clunky that would be over the internet?
VNC is already pretty clunky as it is. I find logmein to be rather
snappy over an internet connection.

Is LogMeIn compatible with Macs or the Linux operating system?

LogMeIn is currently not a compatible download for a Target PC that
uses the Linux or Mac operating system. However, you can use a local
Mac or PC that runs Linux to access a Target PC that runs Windows.

Note: Some Linux machines have incompatible Java installations and you
may encounter some problems with remote control and file transfer. To
make sure you get the best experience, please make sure you have the
latest version of Java installed on your machine. If you require more
help, please contact LogMeIn support.

There is a temporary problem with accessing LogMeIn target PCs from
Macs that can block the use of remote control and file transfer. We
are currently working on this issue and will be offering a fix very
soon.
