It it uses OpenGL, don't you need an accelerated X driver?  There  is some 
acceleration for free Intel drivers and there's non free Nvidia drivers that 
some distributions have that I've used.  My experience is that the non free 
drivers are more stable and easier to upgrade and work with but not quite as 
nice as the non free drivers yet.  

An easy test is PlanetPenguin.  If Tux goes fast, it's working and the fancy 
desktops may work.

For productivity and eye candy, I'm still a fan of E16 which is fast and works 
regardless.
