That has worked for me. Having just completed a job search, it seems that companies normally post salaries if they are way above or way below market. If they're way above market they want to brag about it and attract top talent, and if they're way below market they don't want to interview dozens of people before they get someone who will accept their lousy offer. That's my theory anyway. Also, generally, anything at a university is going to be below market, which is one of the many reasons I'm leaving academia.
