If you see the characters in the web client, something is wrong with PAWS. When did this start?
I've been using Kmail's IMAP since Sarge. Something funny has happened either to Paws or kio_imap4 in Etch. It works ok but occasionally kio_imap4 loses it's mind and has to be terminated. This was not an issue in Sarge. I've never seen this character issue.
