I think it's terrible. Right now M$ is paying Xandros and others but their participation lends legitimacy for M$'s absurd patent claims. Eventually M$ will want to reverse the money flow and tax software they had nothing to do with writing and fought as hard as they could.
The famous "pawns and one night stands" papers published in anti-trust trials should convince just about everyone that it's always a bad move to take M$ advice: they want to waste your resources. Red Hat, Debian and other distributions will never go this way.
